Universal Androot
Universal Androot by Shaka Huang is a universal 1-tap rooting application for many Android OS devices.
This application utilizes the common Android "exploid" to unlock root access for the user. This is our prefered method of rooting devices (when supported) here at Android Super User. In our experience, there is no harm in attempting to use Universal Androot on your device even if it can't root it. We at Android Super User are hosting our own download mirror of Universal Androot for speed and reliability.
Directions:
- Copy UniversalAndroot.apk to your phone's SD Card.
- Find and install UniversalAndroot.apk (we suggest using Astro File Manager)
- After installing, run Universal Androot.
- Tap the "Root :-)" button to root your phone!
- If successful, you will see "Woot ! Your device is rooted !" on the screen!
- To finalize the rooting process, turn your phone off and back on.
- You now have root access!
We are currently looking for users to test Universal Androot device compatibility. In our experience, unsuccessfully attempting to root a device with Universal Androot does not have any adverse effects. If the application cannot write to the folder it is attempting to use for the exploit, it simply notifies you that your device cannot be rooted. Please let us know if Universal Androot worked to root your device and include the device type and Android version in the comments below! (ie: Worked on Motorola Droid running Android v2.1)

Can someone tell me exactly how to install this? I don’t see the .apk file in the folder.
August 17th, 2010 - 23:42
The download itself is a .apk file… if you’re getting a different extension for some reason, simply rename it to .apk and put it on your phone.

Feels like a new phone after some adjustments.

It works on my Moto Droid running Froyo 2.2 FRG22!! :o)
AND….. I also successfully rooted my Devour running Donut 1.6.
This app seems to make an easy task of rooting.
The bummer for my Devour though, is there’s not much you can do after rooting it just yet. Although I found a free overclocking widget on the market that was compatible… and “Android Mate” runs just fine as well.
Now it’s just a matter of “wait & see” if any custom ROMs are developed for the Devour.
Overall, I give Universal Androot FULL STARS on whatever scale you prefer.

I rooted, but now it won’t unroot. I am running the 2.2 Android software and it stopped working properly after the latest update. It won’t redo the root either. I haven’t factory reset yet am hoping I don’t have to go through the hassle.

Julie: Did you install the latest OTA update from Verizon? This would remove root access and cause Universal Androot not to function correctly. It wont let you root OR unroot, because it no longer has access to the exploit it used in the previous version… Essentially you don’t have root access and can’t get it with a 1-tap rooting method… sorry :(
